Ww

warty A term applied to certain species of wild pigs. The "warty pigs" are so-called because the adult males typically develop three pairs of warts: on the cheek swellings, on the jaw angle, and above the canine root flanges

water bugs Even though they breathe air, several kinds of insects can also live underwater and are able to fly, crawl, or swim at will. Called water bugs, such insects belong to the order of true bugs Hemiptera. One of the most common water bugs is the water boatman, the only water bug that can take flight directly from the water. It usually stays anchored to the bottom feeding on algae and organic debris and keeps a supply of air stored under its wings.

weaning The time when a young animal stops nursing and begins utilizing other food.

weasel family More than 60 species of carnivorous mammals, distributed throughout the world, are included in the weasel family Mustelidae. They are placed in five major groups, or subfamilies: true weasels, which include ermine, minks, ferrets, martens, and wolverines; honey badgers; badgers; skunks; and otters.

whale The largest and most powerful animals on Earth are whales. Larger than the ancient dinosaurs, a blue whale may be over 100 feet (30 meters) long and weigh 30,000 pounds (13,600 kilograms), making even an elephant look tiny. Although they spend their lives in the sea, whales are not fish. They are warm-blooded mammals. The young whale is born alive and fed by its mother's milk, like the young of land mammals.

Whales are members of the order Cetacea, along with dolphins, porpoises, and the bizarre-looking narwhal (see Dolphin and Porpoise). There are two basic types of cetaceans: baleen, or whalebone, whales of the scientific suborder Mysticeti and toothed whales of the suborder Odontoceti.
