Visayan Hornbill Penelopides Panini

Habitat/Distribution: 8 races: manillae - Catanduanes, Luzon,  and Marinduque; subnigra - Polillo; samarensis - Biliran, Bohol, Calicaon, Leyte and Samar; affinis - Bucas, Dinagat, Mindanao and Siargao; basilanica - Basilan; panini -Guimaras, Masbate, Negros, Pan de Azucar, Panay and Sicogon; ticaensis - Ticao; mindorensis - Mindoro. 
Habitat / Behavior: panini - being slightly smaller then 21", manillae - 21", ticaensis -24 1/2"; Noisy, in pairs or in small groups, in forest and forest edge up to 1500 m. Usually doesn't fly above the canopy but tends to dart between treetops. Flies with alternate flying and gliding. Often seen perched on exposed branches or dead snags. Breeding recorded in May. Known to lay 3 eggs in tree cavities with the female enclosed in the cavity during incubation.

Call is  1 or 2 distinctly nasal notes eenk resembling sounds of a toy trumpet, with a brief paus between notes. Single notes more commonly given while foraging. While in flight may give several hurried notes in succession (THF & RSK: R. Kennedy and P. Morris recordings)

Threats: Hunting and habitat loss
Interesting Information: Smallest hornbill in the Philippines. Kemp in 1995 suggested dividing the Tarictic Hornbill into 4 different species: Tarictic Hornbill (Penelopides manillae) with races manillae and subnigra; Mindanao Hornbill (Penelopides affinis) with races affinis, samarensis and basilanica; Visayan Hornbill (Penelopides panini) comprising of races panini and ticaensis; and Mindoro Hornbill (Penelopides mindorensis)
