Dako, Dagatan (Cebuano), Taklobo (Tagalog), Manlot (Ilonggo) Discoverer: Roding, 1758 Category: VULNERABLE Description: Habitat/Distribution: Restricted to Palawan Islands, also in Australia, Pacific Islands and Indonesia (Alcala 1990 and Calumpong 1992) Habitat / Behavior: Outer edges of reefs about 4-20 m; appears to favor oceanic environments more than fringing reefs adjacent to large island masses (Alcala 1990). In lagoons, inhabit sand flats and coral heads, often associated with Acropora rubble. Spawning occurs early summer in the Philippines (Munro, 1993). Threats: Heavily exploited for food. Interesting Information: The 2nd largest species of giant clams, reaching 50 cm or more in length (Calumpong 1992) Conservation Efforts/Measures:It's being cultured at SUML and the UPMSI, and have been reseeded in areas with protected reefs such as Pamilacan Island in Bohol, and Apo Marine Reserve in Negros Occidental (Alcazar, 1992) Photograph Information: courtesy of the |
