kingfisher, Discoverer: Sharpe 1876 Category: ENDANGERED Habitat/Distribution: 5 races: nigrorum - Bilaran, Bohol, Calicaon, Cebu, Leyte, Negros, Samar and Siquijor; nesydrionetes - Romblon, Sibuyan, Sicogon, and Tablas; mindanensis - Mindanao; winchelli - Basilan; alfredi - Bongao, Jolo, Papahag, Sanga sanga (duPont and Rabor, 1973) and Tawi-Tawi. Habitat / Behavior: L 9 1/2"; Easy to hear, hard to see in forests or along streams in the forest, usually below 1000m. It prefers high perches in the forest but also feeds on the ground. On some smaller islands it can be almost common. Food consists of invertobrates and small vertibrates. A male collected on Bilaran had enlarged testes on April 15. Nest, eggs and breeding habits unknown.
Voice: Somewhat variable in pace and quality. One call is an ascending series
of 3-6 harsh metallic chup chep chep chep chep, the 1st 2 notes are slower,
the remainder faster, lasting about 1.5 sec and repeated every 3-4 sec. A
2nd call is longer and the notes repeated faster, chup chup chup chu chu
chu chu... rising with 1st 3 notes, followed by a longer descending and slowing
series of up to 20 more notes or more than eventually level off, lasting
about 6-8 secs and repeated about every 10 secs (THF & RSK: P. Morris
