Little Golden-mantled Flying Fox Pteropus pumilus (Miller, 1910)
Common Names: Paniki, kabag, bayakan
Status:Declining due to habitat destruction, but still fairly wide-spread and stable.
IUCN: Vulnerable. CITES: Appendix II.
Distribution:
Endemic to the Philippines, excluding Batanes/Babuyan and Palawan faunal regions. It is also on Miangas Island, Indonesia, adjacent to Mindanao. Records from Balut (USNM), Camiguin (DMNH), Leyte (DMNH), Maripipi (USNM), Masbate (SU), Mindanao (Zamboanga del Sur [USNM]), Mindoro (MCZ), Negros (FMNH), Palmas (USNM), Panay (SU), Sibuyan (FMNH), Siquijor (SU), and Tablas (AMNH).
Habitat : Associated with primary and well-developed secondary lowland forest from sea-level to about 1100 m, rarely to 1250 m, uncommon outside of forest. This species is most common on small islands and uncommon to rare on larger islands (Heaney, 1984; Heaney et al., 1989; Heideman & Heaney, 1989; Lepiten, 1995; Rickart et al., 1993; Utzurrum, 1992).
Behavior:
The Little Golden-mantled flying fox has a wingspan of 30 inches ( 76.2 cm) and a weight of about 7 ounces ( 200g ) This species do not live in large flocks as other Pteropus species and prefer a more solitary family roosting situation in dense mountain forest.The Little Golden-mantled flying fox is endemic to the Philippines in that it is found no where else in the world. This bat is quite vulnerable in the wild due to hunting and loss of habit
Threats: It's population has plummeted due to hunting and habitat destruction. *
Interesting Information: Part of the family of Pteropodidae or Fruit Bats.

Conservation Efforts/Measures: The Lubee Foundation, Inc., the Silliman University and the Department of the Environment and Natural Resources of the Philippines have established a joint program for the conservation and captive propagation of this species. This species is held in captivity only at two facillities in the world which are the Lubee Foundation and CENTROP at the Silliman University in the Philippines.
