(Pilipino), Dumaras (Tagalog), Kamasu, Gakit (Visayan), Philippine Duck Habitat/Distribution: Found throughout the Philippines in large tracts of well vegetated marshlands, flooded paddies and undisturbed slow-moving rivers, where it feeds usually at night (T.Fisher and N. Hicks, 2000). Common in freshwater marshes, shallow lakes, and ricefields, sometimes in bays, in pairs or in flocks often with other feeding ducks (Kennedy et al., 2000). (Monotypic)- Bohol, Catanduanes, Guimaras, Lubang, Luzon, Marinduque, Masbate, Mindanao, Mindoro, Negros, Panay, Polillo, Samar, Sibuyan ( Goodman et al, 1995), Siquijor and Ticao (Kennedy et al., 2000).
Habitat / Behavior: 51cm. Seen usually in a large flock that congregate
in sheltered bays in daylight. The nests are made of grass and placed in
dense clumps near the water. It is a fairly large and heavy duck, grey-brown
except for the rufous face, neck and throat, and dark brown cap and eye-stripe.
In flight, the whitish underwing lining and dark flight feathers are
diagnostic. The call, probably given by the female is a "quack-quack" (T.Fisher
and N. Hicks, 1999). L 20"; Wingspan 33"; Note th eyellow tip to bill, white
supercilium, dark line through eye and fairly uniform grayish brown body
are distictive. Also note contrasting white wing lining with dark flight
feathers. Call is a harsh quack. May breed all year round as there
are records of ducklings in March, April, May, September, October, and
December. May breed in any isolated water habitat including, flooded ricefields.
Nests are well hidden. clutch is 8 to 16, eggs are dull white with
