Giant Scops Owl  Mimizuku gurneyi
Common Names:  Lesser Eagle Owl
Discoverer:  Tweedale 1879
Category: VULNERABLE
Habitat/Distribution: Range (Monotypic)- Mindanao, Dinagat and Siargao (WCSP, 1997); Lives in forest and forest edge usually foraging high in the understory. Ranges from the lowlands to about 1500m, higher on some mountains. Has been found in small clumps of trees in grasslands, far away from the forest. During day, roosts haunched against trucks of trees between forks.(Kennedy et al., 2000)
Habitat / Behavior: raptorial, nocturnal (WCSP, 1997). Female 15", Male 12"; Birds with enlarged gonads recorded in April and May. Call a loud, explosive single note wokkk, waokk or a raspier owwwkkk, which may be repeated 15 to 30 sec intervals or given only once. calls infrequently through the night (RSK: R. Kennedy recording)
Threats: Extensive habitat clearance
