| Common
Names:
Discoverer: Tweedale,1878 Category: ENDANGERED Status: ENDEMIC Habitat/Distribution: Forest in Cebu Habitat / Behavior: 3½" in length. Confind to canopy where it feeds on flowering and fruiting vines and trees. Noted that it breeds in July. The call is a seep seep seep followed by clicking notes tik-tik-tik-tik like rapidly striking 2 pebbles together(R. Kennedy field notes). Threats: Habitat destruction and competition with the Red-keeled Flowerpecher, which is highly aggressive. Interesting Information: The CEBU FLOWERPECKER, widely recognized as the rarest bird in the world. The four-inch bird, of which four individuals have been confirmed, was filmed as it fed on berries. Known to live only on this small island, the Flowerpecker was presumed extinct since 1906 until its stunning rediscovery in 1992 in a very small patch of forest in Tabunan. Since then, broadcasters and scientists from around the world have been visiting the island since 1992 in an attempt to film the elusive species.(CNN-Canada, 1992); A small population has been found in and near the Central Cebu national Park.
